Female Filmmakers Make a Statement in Seattle

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Seattle, WA (January 9, 2014) – The dramatic short, The Last Light, a chilling and poignant tale exploring the issue of child abduction and its often tragic aftermath, has kicked of its festival run with a bang!

After its international premiere in Leith, Scotland at the ProFiRe Short Film Festival, The Last Light has returned home for its Seattle premiere at the Women in Film sponsored Post Alley Film Festival (http://www.postalleyfilmfestival.com/)

The Last Light will screen alongside an array of international shorts on Saturday, February 8th at the SIFF Film Center 11am-7pm.

“I always work on corporate projects, but I never stepped out of the box and done a project outside of my day job,” Director Jennifer Cummins says. Cummins has directed and produced videos for Sunsports, ABC News, KelbyTv.com, and KelbyTraining.com. She has also worked with Turner Broadcasting, and Carnival Cruiselines.

“When someone asks me what I do as a profession, I always pause before saying a typical thing like, ‘Editor’ or ‘Director’ and instead say, ‘I’m a story-teller’. Storytelling is my passion! So when I realized I had never had the chance to take the lead on an independent film, I immediately created that opportunity for myself.” – Jennifer Cummins

Within two months of that decision, Cummins had selected a script, successfully funded a small IndieGoGo campaign, cast the film, shot it in one weekend, personally completed the editing and submitted The Last Light to over a dozen film festivals nationally and internationally.

She couldn’t have done it without the support of her Producer, local award-winning documentary filmmaker Lisa Cooper (Beyond Naked, The Coffinmaker) and local award-winning screenwriter, Persephone Vandergrift (All Things Hidden, Death of a Mortal Woman). The score is composed by Catherine Grealish, whose music was featured in award-winning films, including the short, Reversal (Post Alley Film Festival 2012).

“There aren’t enough female directors in this industry,” Cummins explains. “By continuing to produce work that is strongly backed by female filmmakers and getting the word out to the community, I’m hoping more opportunities will come our way. We have great stories to tell.”

Starring Telisa Steen, Sarah Dennis, Elora Coble, Randall Dai, Pearl Klein and Danika Collins, The Last Light follows a mother’s journey through grief after the loss of her youngest daughter.

The film has been approached by the American Online Film Festival (http://americanonlinefilmawards.org/) to participate in the 2014 winter showcase in New York.
